11) 'Jesus Fest 2010' - Family Fun Day
This Year's 'Jesus Fest' Is Saturday May 15, 2010 - See You There !
(Rain Date Is Sunday May 16)
The 2009 Jesus Fest Theme was "Sowing Seed"
Come Out And Be A Shining Light For The Lord Jesus !
Jesus Fest '09 was held with thousands of people at the Manahawkin Lake Park (on the mainland near Long Beach Island, NJ) from 10 am to 7 pm - and 22 Christian Churches of Southern Ocean County participated, plus other ministries!
Their website is: www.CCSOC.com.
Jesus Fest Is An Annual Event And Is A Lot Of Fun. Make plans to be with the thousands of people at Jesus Fest. We hope to see you there.
We Would Like To Thank Randy Aldred and Todd & Joellen Andree for your many hours of time in organizing and working at Jesus Fest to help make Jesus Fest A Great Success.
The Purpose Of Jesus Fest Is Always:
1) To Proclaim That Jesus Christ Is Lord And Savior To Our Local Community.
2) To Celebrate Jesus' Love For Us And Worship Him Publicly.
3) To promote unity and fellowship among the local Bible-preaching churches of Southern Ocean County according to Psalm 133:1.
Jesus Fest Continues To Grow Bigger And Better Each Year !
One theme was Jonah And The Whale. We featured many activities, puppet shows, music, dramas and more on the timeless lesson that Jonah learned - to carry the Lord's message to those who do not know of His wonderful plan of salvation! We had live praise bands from the local churches (awesome worship and praise!) playing all day on the main stage. The Unity Choir, made up of members of many local churches, blessed us again.
The Kids Area featured A Giant 70ft Inflatable Whale, pony rides and a "Walk & Witness" through the "town of Nineveh" with interactive puppets to represent the town's people that need the Lord. We had Jonah and the Whale puppet shows throughout the day. As always, we had Simon Peter's Fishing Hole and face-painting with prizes. All the kids had a super time while they learned about Jonah!
Our speaker on the main stage was Joanne Sheptock - mother of 37 children (90% adopted).
The Youth (teen) area had their own stage with live contemporary music all day. Pro Street Skater Danny And His Team were at the Youth area performing awesome skate stunts!
Back by popular demand this year, we had THE MAZE - a giant 40x40ft enclosed maze in total darkness... with many multimedia surprizes along the way! Over 1,250 young people went through THE MAZE at Jesus Fest this year! Its purpose is to be an evangelistic outreach to teens.
Many teens said that THE MAZE was very challenging and effective in its pupose. We were blessed to having The Maze back at Jesus Fest. More information on The Maze is at www.mazeoutreach.org
As always, the churches cooked up all our favorite foods at very reasonable prices. Proceeds benefit the youth groups' and churches missionary projects.
This year's United For Jesus T-shirt designs are shown below. We sold over 800 T-shirts this year. After expenses, proceeds from the shirts sales and event advertising always go to the local ministries that the CCSOC sponsors that year.
Our recipients are: America's Keswick, The Alliance Defense Fund, and Christian radio station WYRS 90.7 FM. Thanks again to all of you, the local businesses and people who supported Jesus Fest.

* Harvey Cedars Bible Conference
* Maris Stella Retreat & Conference Center
* America's KESWICK Christian Conference & Retreat Center
A) Harvey Cedars Bible Conference
Cedars & Atlantic Avenues Harvey Cedars, NJ 08008 609-494-5689
Their website is: www.HCBible.com
Harvey Cedars Bible Conference has Conferences & Retreats for Groups as well as individuals.
The History Of Harvey Cedars Bible Conference written in "Eighteen Miles Of History On Long Beach Island" by John Bailey Lloyd is as follows:
The old hotel was vacant once more, but this time it was in terrible condition, having been vandalized repeatedly. Then one summer on the eve of WW II, a young evangelist named Jack Murray and his friend Bill Ritchie saw the old hotel while they were fishing. Intrigued by the building, they went in and decided then and there that it would make an ideal "Religious Retreat" for young people. They located its owner, Mabel Bayard, in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, offered all they could afford to raise, $7,500, and it was accepted.
It took an incredible amount of hard work to restore the old hotel, but with lots of help they did it, and Harvey Cedars Bible Conference opened in 1941. As the last of the great 19th century hotels on Long Beach Island, The Harvey Cedars Bible Conference Is In Better Condition Now on LBI than it was a 100 years ago.

B) Maris Stella Retreat & Conference Center
Long Beach Boulevard Harvey Cedars, NJ 08008 609-494-1182

Article By Maria Scandale mariascandale@thesandpaper.net
A seaside retreat on Long Beach Island is celebrating 50 years as a haven for the body, mind and spirit. Maris Stella Retreat and Conference Center in Harvey Cedars began in 1959 as a secluded vacation place for the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth, but evolved from private use into a ministry sponsored by the sisters.
The bay-to-ocean property has become a place of “enrichment and reflection” for a wide range of religious, ecumenical, parish and support groups.
The Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth observed their 50th anniversary of the center. There’s much to celebrate, including a conference center built in 2006 to accommodate groups year ’round. The geothermal, solar-powered center is one example of the grounds’ green innovations that speak of the sisters’ commitment to reverence and care for the Earth.
“In renovating the chapel and constructing the conference center from scratch, most of the materials used were either recycled or taken from renewable sources,” said Sr. Thomas Mary Salerno, administrator at Maris Stella. “For instance, the bamboo flooring in the chapel and the cork flooring in the conference center both come from sustainable resources, as both plants regenerate themselves over time.”
Installing the geothermal and solar-powered systems “initially was expensive, but now we’re realizing savings in our electricity bills,” said Salerno. “It’s beginning to be substantial.”
Approximately 250 guests are expected to attend the daylong celebratory program of the 50th anniversary. It will include displays and memorabilia of the “early days,” a narrative history with highlights of events and happenings during the past 50 years; talk about the geothermal features of the conference center; guided tours of the houses on the property; and a festive picnic lunch under tents on the front lawn.
The day’s activities will conclude with a Mass of Thanksgiving in the newly renovated chapel at 4 p.m. “We are delighted to have so many Sisters of Charity and friends of Maris Stella joining us to celebrate 50 years of ministry in this special sacred space,” said Salerno.
"Maris Stella is a center that provides a ministry of hospitality offering space to individuals and groups seeking physical, psychological and spiritual enrichment. It is also a place for study and reflection on the sacredness of creation,” she summed up. “To that end, we provide opportunities for private, directed, guided and preached retreats as well as education programs on the environment and the arts".
Many Groups Share the Center. Frederick Small, long-ago president of American Express, originally owned the 10 acres where the retreat center stands. The compound had been built in the 1920s. Small was an avid gardener as well as a stamp collector, according to a history compiled by Salerno. In a bayside garden fenced in with glass, he grew gladiolas that were admired by many other Island residents.
In 1959, Mother Ellen Marie McCauley, the general superior of the Sisters of Charity, learned that Small was interested in selling the property and saw this as a great opportunity to buy the land as a vacation spot for the order. At that time there were very few places the sisters could go to for vacations. And so during the 1960s and ’70s, that’s what the retreat was used for.
Two of the compound’s houses on the oceanfront, as well as the bulkhead, didn’t escape the great March nor’easter of 1962. With constant renovations over the years, there are now accommodations for 75 people among all the houses on the property. As time went on, Maris Stella welcomed women’s religious orders from other congregations to join them for retreats. Next, high school students and self-help support groups were hosted for retreat weekends.
It wasn’t until 2002 that Maris Stella remained open all year. Another milestone came in 2003 when, through the efforts of the administrator and the cooperation of the borough, Maris Stella was declared tax-free. “This was a happy day for the Sisters of Charity,” said Salerno. The conference center came about due to the increasing number of retreatants and other groups using Maris Stella.
“Many diverse groups come to Maris Stella for a sacred space for reflection and prayer,” said Salerno. Those groups include college students from Villanova, Seton Hall and others; faculties of universities, multi-denominational church-affiliated groups, diocesan groups and others. Recently members of the Jewish community chose the Maris Stella boardwalk for their ceremony in which they cast bread to the waters. Adult support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous and women writers use the retreat center as a meeting place.
To ensure the growth of the environmental programs held at Maris Stella, the center has become a member of the American Littoral Society, Clean Ocean Action and Alliance for a Living Ocean. Maris Stella has been a setting where elementary and secondary school students have learned about pollution, global warming and becoming stewards of the shore. Younger children have seined in the bay.
The sisters encourage others to see the web site at www.marisstella.org for more information on the retreat calendar or using the center.

* Reach 88.3 FM Christian Radio Network plays Christian Music, but Reach FM 88.3 is not all about music. They definitely let you know they are about more than Christian Music and their "Outreach Programs" to bring people to Jesus Christ are extremely important.
One of these "Outreach Programs" involves setting up 100 - 6 ft. crosses (on a platform) on the toughest street corners in Chester, PA and Philadelphia, PA where actual murders take place. These are some of the toughest street corners in the United States.
Reach FM 88.3 sends teams of people to do remote broadcasts from these street corners and announce loudly in the neighborhoods to come and get Free Food and T-Shirts. Many people while at the cross accept Jesus Christ as their Savior, and many more people in the neighborhoods are seen with their heads bowed and praying.
